Self-Abandonment for Approval

Definition

Self-abandonment for approval describes a person unconsciously shrinking herself — softening opinions, suppressing needs, over-accommodating, or putting everyone else's needs ahead of her own — out of an internalized belief that being loved depends on being "easy enough" or "good enough," or on never taking up space in the first place. It is distinguished from active pursuit behaviors (chasing, checking, seeking reassurance) by its direction: instead of pursuing another person, the person recedes from themselves.

Two variant drivers of the pattern appear across sources:

  1. Reactive — shrinking triggered by a partner's emotional withdrawal (reduced warmth, slower replies), which activates an accommodation response.
  2. Preemptive — self-deprioritization performed in advance of any withdrawal cue, as a way of "giving yourself the rejection" before someone else can: "you want to put yourself last before others do because you want to be the first one to give the rejection to yourself." (raw/ig-reel-video-by-margarita-nazarenko-dajadb7zjwd, transcript ¶5)

How It Works

Reactive trigger. The pattern is triggered by subtle, non-dramatic withdrawal cues from a partner — reduced warmth, slower responses, quieter presence — rather than by overt conflict or rejection: "He did not do anything dramatic. He just got a little quieter. Took a little longer... she felt the shift and her whole system went into work" (raw/ig-carousel-see-you-on-june-16th-dzbshuvmhgu, slide 1).

The response is behavioral accommodation performed reflexively rather than chosen: faster replies, reduced requests, self-minimization, and swallowing hurt: "She started texting back faster. Asking for less. Taking up less space. Laughing things off that actually stung." The carousel frames this explicitly as performance, not temperament: "She was not being easygoing. She was auditioning." (raw/ig-carousel-see-you-on-june-16th-dzbshuvmhgu, slide 2).

Claim [synthesis]: The driving mechanism is a conditional-love belief formed prior to the relationship, generalizing from "she learned that love is conditional. That if she is not careful, not easy enough, not good enough, she will lose it. So she became whatever she thought would keep it." (raw/ig-carousel-see-you-on-june-16th-dzbshuvmhgu, slide 3).

Sustained accommodation erodes self-presence rather than only affecting the relationship: "Her opinions got quieter. Her needs felt like inconveniences. Her worth became directly tied to whether he was warm that day. She handed him the remote control to her self esteem and did not even realise she had done it." (raw/ig-carousel-see-you-on-june-16th-dzbshuvmhgu, slide 4).

Preemptive trigger. A distinct driver operates independent of any observed withdrawal: the person puts herself last on her own initiative, framed as pain avoidance rather than accommodation. The stated logic is to pre-empt the sting of being rejected by choosing oneself and then not being chosen: "So you put yourself second just so that you don't have to feel the pain of them. They don't have to reject you. You've already rejected yourself, baby girl." (raw/ig-reel-video-by-margarita-nazarenko-dajadb7zjwd, transcript ¶7). Where the reactive mechanism responds to a partner's behavior, this mechanism is self-initiated and anticipatory — the rejection is manufactured internally before any external cue arrives.

The reel frames this preemptive self-rejection as suppressing an inner signal about one's own potential: "there's a small part of you inside that knows you were born for better things you were born for greater things you were born for an amazing life" (raw/ig-reel-video-by-margarita-nazarenko-dajadb7zjwd, transcript ¶8), and claims the suppression surfaces physically over time, invoking a "the body keeps the score" framing: "your body does hold the score. Ask Gabomate, he will tell you that, right? and it holds the score so it makes sure you rest when you're already running yourself dry." (raw/ig-reel-video-by-margarita-nazarenko-dajadb7zjwd, transcript ¶10–11)

Key Parameters

When To Use

This lens is useful for identifying moments where a person notices herself going quiet, softening requests, or laughing off hurt specifically after a partner becomes less available — as opposed to moments of active pursuit (texting more, seeking reassurance). The source frames recognition itself as the entry point to change: "the goal is not to stop caring. The goal is to stop disappearing... To stay rooted in yourself even when he is not as available as you want him to be." (raw/ig-carousel-see-you-on-june-16th-dzbshuvmhgu, slide 6).

The intended internal shift is decoupling self-trust from the partner's behavior rather than changing the partner: "When she stopped managing his feelings and started coming back to her own, something shifted. Not because he changed. Because she stopped needing him to. That is what self trust actually looks like." (raw/ig-carousel-see-you-on-june-16th-dzbshuvmhgu, slide 7).

It is also useful to distinguish the preemptive variant from the reactive one: if the self-deprioritization is present from the outset of a relationship or situation — rather than appearing only after a partner cools off — the more relevant framing is the anticipatory "give myself the rejection first" mechanism, whose stated remedy is reversing priority order directly rather than waiting for a trigger: "The way to get the life you want and the love of the people you want... is to put yourself first in the first place."
